Primaries have to go!

I am tied about the media's obsession with Iowa and the primaries state. We can land people on the moon but we can't seem to develop a modern primary system. Everybody knows this nation needs a primary system that will allow the electorate a fair opportunity to be exposed to more ideas and ideologies than just the front-runners and what the mass media want us to hear.

For the record, I am tired of our present primary system and believe now that it only remains in place because the political elite can manipulate it easier than they can an efficient one.

No, if we, the people, ever want to have a fair primary system, we, the people, will have to get the job done ourselves.

I agree. There is no reason not to have a national primary.  Plenty of countries do it. We should have a one day national primary.

Re: Primaries have to go! (none / 0)

While I agree that the present system has deep institutional flaws, a national primary would be a disaster in my opinion.

Candidates would concentrate their money on ad buys in CA, NY, FL, IL, OH, & TX.  Unless there is public financing for elections, free ad time from local and national broadcasters and press and real debates with mandatory participation by all candidates a national primary will only  produce a candidate who raises the most money.

The system is broken for sure, but let's not destroy it beyond all repair.

Here is my plan (2.00 / 1)

I plan on writing Jimmie Carter, GHW Bush, Bob Dole, Bill Clinton, Mondale, and several others later on this year. I will ask them to form a BI-PARTISAN COMMISSION to reform the primary system.  My favorite approach would be the 4 super-Tuesday approach in which regional primaries are used in April, May, June and July of Election Year.  In addition, the FEC would authorized to HEAVILY FINE any person who SPECULATED, DISCUSSED, made predictions about, thought about, or otherwise started the primary season before March 1 of election year.

Thoughts?  Will you join me in my letters to the Wise Men?

Absolutely!

Too costly for 1 thing!

just have  national or a series of regional primaries.  And candidates can do 4-6 national debates ands their own Q/A sessions on C-span, their own ads on you-tube!
